Structural Steel Erection for Airport Infrastructure

Hard Bakka Rigging erected the structural steel and purlins for Zones 1 and 2 of the Operations Control Centre (OCC) at Western Sydney International Airport. The package covered approximately 166.8 tonnes of structural steel and 5,405 lineal metres of purlins and girts, completed in 2025.

The OCC is the nerve centre of the airport, managing airfield lighting, ground movement, terminal systems and emergency response. Airport infrastructure runs on a strict programme and strict compliance requirements, so lift studies and staged erection planning came first. The steel went up in planned stages across both zones, with structural alignment checked as each stage was erected.

Quality control ran through the whole package. The OCC is CC2 structural steel, erected to AS 4100 and AS/NZS 5131, with QA checklists, ITPs and bolt verification recorded as erection progressed.
